Historical Change - The Tuskegee Airman In-Person
The Tuskegee Airmen is the popular name of a group of African-American pilots who fought in World War II. Officially, they formed the 332nd Fighter Group and the 477th Bombardment Group of the United States Army Air Corps. The name also applies to the navigators, bombardiers, mechanics, instructors, crew chiefs, nurses, cooks, and other support personnel assigned to them. The Tuskegee Airmen received praise for their excellent combat record earned while protecting American bombers from enemy fighters. The presentation will highlight some of the historical roadblocks that stood in the way of establishing and fielding the 332nd Fighter Group and the determined leadership that prevented the Tuskegee Airmen from becoming just another "failed experiment".
